| Peacock Cottage is a 300 year old real character New Forest
cottage, set in an idyllic quiet leafy lane at Barton Common,
Barton on Sea. The beach is less than half a mile, just minutes
walk from the cottage. The beautiful lane is home to several very old New Forest
Cottages, and the immediate location provides an ideal retreat
for a weekend break, a short break midweek or a full holiday. The beach at Barton on Sea, with views across to the Needles
on the Isle of Wight to the left and across Christchurch Bay
to the Purbecks, is a very short walk away, and is often host
to hang-gliders and kitesurfers alike, and the cliff top is
                    popular for kite-flying. There’s a clifftop café
which is open all year round, and just a few yards on is well
known restauant ‘Pebble Beach’, voted number six
in the Times’ ‘50 Best Places to Eat by the Sea’,
and features in the Sunday Times ‘Britains top 100 restaurants
guide’. At the end of 2008 Peacock Cottage was rescued from dereliction,
undergoing a major refurbisment programme which revealed the
character of the cottage inside, much of which had been covered
in hardboard for many years! There are the original timber
boarded ceilings, two fireplaces, glorius rendered walls softly
punctured by the characterful old oak and leaded light windows.
A large central wall was removed between the main part of
the cottage and a later kitchen addition, which now provides
a large contemporary open plan kitchen/dining/living social
space at the heart of the cottage. The back wall was also
removed and contemporary floor to ceiling glazing to this
space now allows engagement with the garden all year round. The comfortable double aspect lounge has an open fire, perfect
for winter breaks, timber boarded ceiling, and glazed double
doors opening on to the garden. It is furnished with three
settees and various armchairs. The wooden parquet floor skillfully
made by a previous occupant many years ago from trees from
the garden has been uncovered and refinished. Theres a television
with DVD player in here, and a double sofabed, providing an
extra bedroom when required. The kitchen/dining/living space is central to this New Forest
cottage. Entering from the hall, you’ll feel the sense
of space, with the views straight down the garden. The higher
part of this space has another open fireplace and a secondary
lounge area, with armchairs and rug, with leaded windows affording
views over the front garden. The lounge is accessed from this
part of the room. Down a single step is the dining area, which
has a large table before the full height glazed wall, giving
an ‘al fresco’ feel to your dining. A comprehensive
range of cooking and dining equipment for use during your
stay is provided. The upstairs at Peacock Cottage is light and characterful,
each bedroom having different views over the gardens, all
but one of them is dual aspect. There are doubles and family
rooms, all have a double bed. Additionally there is a ground floor twin bedroom off the
hall, and a feature of Peacock Cottage is the two contemporary
limestone and travertine bathrooms, one on each floor. The
lower one has a basin, wc and Japanese bath with overhead
thermostatic rainshower, and the upstairs bathroom has basin,
wc, large walk in glazed shower space and modern double ended
freestanding bath. Please browse the gallery for photographs of Peacock
